Friday, March 12, 2010: Red Fire Farm- Growing Greens all Winter
One of the most exciting developments in the local foods movement has been the advancement of winter green production here in the Northeast! A few years ago it was hard to find fresh local greens through out the winter months, and now there are several farms here in the Valley growing tasty greens all winter long. One such farm is Red Fire Farm in Granby, which supplies us with crisp bok choi, spicy salad mixes and juicy lettuces. They grow their winter greens in 5 high tunnel greenhouses on approximately one acre of land. The greenhouses are minimally heated to prevent the crops from freezing. Red Fire Farm is owned and operated by Ryan and Sarah Voiland, pictured below. During the spring, summer and fall they run a large CSA program on their 110-acre farm.
