Friday, February 19, 2010: Farm Highlight- Apex Orchards, Shelburne

We are now getting our apples from Apex Orchards. Their crisp, sweet apples won us over, and we felt they were so good we had to pass them along to you! Here is a little bit of info about the orchard and the apples they grow. The orchards have been in production since 1828. The hills of Franklin County have been described as one of the best apple growing regions of the country. The soils, elevation and cool fall temperatures make for a microclimate ideal for apples. Besides apples, Apex also grows peaches, pears, Asian pears, plums, apricots and pumpkins. You can go pick your own apples and other fruits in the fall at the scenic orchard, with views of Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire in the distance. Apex does minimal spraying of pesticides and fungicides, and uses some IPM (Integrated Pest Management) methods. We like their ecological practices as much as the apples themselves! We hope you enjoy them, cooked, baked and raw!
